Heritage
Toruń's historical heritage is among the richest and best-preserved in Poland and in Central Europe - the city is a living museum of the past, especially the Middle Ages. At the same time, this heritage is very distinct and concrete. Few cities possess such strong attributes, which also constitute its widely recognized promotional brands:
Medieval Old Town
Toruń's greatest treasure is its Old Town complex, listed on the UNESCO list as the Medieval Town of Toruń. The 13th-century urban layout has survived almost unchanged - cobbled streets, Gothic townhouses, and monumental churches create a unique atmosphere. The entire city consists of three medieval units, dating back to the 13th century: the Old Town, the New Town, and the Teutonic Castle.
The Teutonic Order and the Origins of the City
Toruń was founded in 1231 by the Teutonic Order. The Teutonic Knights erected a massive castle here, the ruins of which can be visited today. This castle served as a base for the conquest of the pagan Prussians and the establishment of the Teutonic State. The city quickly became an important trading center within the Hanseatic League.
Nicolaus Copernicus
Toruń is the birthplace of Nicolaus Copernicus – one of the greatest scientists in history, the creator of the heliocentric theory. His family home is now a museum, and the Copernicus monument is one of the city's symbols.
Gothic Architecture
Toruń's world-class architecture and art date back to the period of Poland's pre-partition glory and are a testament to its former economic and political power. They testify to the high culture of Toruń's former burghers and their financial capabilities.
The city is famous for its impressive and unique red brick buildings, such as:
St. John's Cathedral,
St. Mary's Church
St. James' Church
Old City Town Hall
Leaning Tower and others
These are among the most valuable examples of Brick Gothic in Europe.
Toruń Gingerbread
The tradition of baking Toruń gingerbread, which dates back to the Middle Ages, cannot be overlooked. Toruń gingerbread was known and exported throughout Europe.
Political and Economic History
Toruń has played an important role in the history of Poland and Europe:
- Toruń holds a significant place in Polish and global history. It played a pivotal role in the development of the settlement network and in shaping the social consciousness of the bourgeoisie of present-day Poland and Central Europe,
- it was the place where the Second Peace of Toruń was signed (1466), ending the Thirteen Years' War and liquidating the Teutonic state in its previous form,
- for centuries, it was at the crossroads of Polish and Western influences.
