Inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List recognizes sites that constitute the common good of humanity and are of highest universal value. Additionally, they must meet at least one of ten criteria, for example, they must represent "a masterpiece of human creative genius" or represent "an important exchange of human values ​​throughout history." The bar has been set very high, and Toruń meets two criteria: 1) "the sites have influenced the subsequent development of architecture,"
2) "the sites constitute an outstanding work illustrating a historical period."
