Getting to Toruń by car

Toruń is one of the country's most important road junctions. Three important national and international roads run through the city:

  • the A1 motorway (international E75) from the south via Katowice, Częstochowa, and Łódź to Gdańsk.
  • No. 10 from Warsaw to Szczecin
  • No. 15 from Wrocław (Trzebnica) via Gniezno (from where road No. 2 (international E30) leads to Poznań and Berlin) to Olsztyn and the Masurian Lake District.

At the same time, Toruń's near-central location in Poland makes it a convenient and easily accessible.

Driving licences issued in other countries are generally valid in Poland.
The wearing of seatbelts is obligatory.
The headlights must be on day and night.
Speed limits in Poland: built-up areas: 50 km/h, outside built-up areas: 90 km/h, motorways (labeled A): 140 km/h; highways (labeled S): 120 km/h

Getting to Toruń by air

Toruń Airport does not operate sheduled flights. The nearest airport, the best connected to Toruń and with extensive connections to European cities, is in Gdańsk (170 km North, approximately 1.5 hours via the A1 motorway).
Poznań Airport also offers an extensive network of connections (165 km South-West, approximately 2.5 hours via national road no. 15).
The distance to Warsaw-Modlin Airport from Toruń is 175 km, approximately 2.5 hours via national road no. 10.
The distance to Warsaw Chopin Airport from Toruń is 220 km, approximately 3.5 hours via national road no. 10.
Although Bydgoszcz Airport is located 52 km from Toruń, it does not offer many satisfactory connections; it is one of the smallest and most subsidized Polish airports. Regular connections are possible thanks to funding from the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship authorities; this allows to fly to Warsaw and four cities in the UK (Bristol, Birmingham, Luton, Stansted), Ireland (Dublin), Germany (Frankfurt) and Spain (Alicante).

Getting to Toruń by train

You can get to Toruń Główny - main Toruń railway station - by direct train from almost any Polish city and town. The extensive Polish rail network is operated by the PKP (the Polish National Railways).

Toruń Główny station is a railway hub, serving direct main lines to Poznań, Olsztyn (via Toruń Miasto and Toruń Wschodni stations), Bydgoszcz, and Warsaw.
Some trains (most often those traveling from Kutno towards Olsztyn or vice versa) have a slightly longer stop at the station, requiring a change of direction and the transfer of the locomotive to the other end of the train. Others begin their journey here and are often transferred earlier. The remaining trains do not stop for more than a few minutes.

The first half-timbered station building was built in 1861, following the construction of the railway line from Bydgoszcz to Kutno (Warsaw) in 1862. It was initially called Toruń Przedmieście. The current building was constructed in 1874. The location of the station and the main railway facilities in Toruń was adversely affected, among other things, by the fortification system (Toruń Fortress). This led to the location of Toruń's main station far from the city center, resulting in the construction of only a small passenger station, Toruń Miasto, in the city center. Originally, the main station was located as close as possible to the historic city center, with the easiest connection via a bridge over the Vistula River, which (until 1877) led from the mouth of Mostowa Street directly to the station.

The station was built within the 19th-century Przyczółek Mostowy fort.
